Oh, man … I’m always terrible at writing about myself. But I’ll give it a go.
A passionate writer and cinephile, I’m a sophomore at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, majoring in English. I’ve probably been writing film reviews and entertainment columns for close to eight years now, working online and in various newspapers and magazines (that’s supposed to impress you, by the way). I’ve been published in JagWire, The Mast and The (Tacoma) News Tribune and featured with the River and Sound Review writer series. I’ve also been recognized several times by the WJEA, JEA and SPJ national journalism associations, most notably with a Superior Rating for my opinion writing (again, this is a feeble attempt to impress you).
I suppose my love of film can be traced back to my early childhood, when I was introduced to films like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Back to the Future by my dad. Enamored with the art of cinema, I took to sneaking out of my room at night to watch movies like The Terminator, Aliens, Predator and True Lies over my unsuspecting parents’ shoulders. This infatuation with action films has lingered with me through the years, and I still hold a significant soft-spot for well-made blockbusters. After briefly entertaining the idea of becoming a director (resulting in disaster and a broken camcorder), I found my true calling at age 13: film journalism.
I sport a versatile taste in film, enjoying everything from bloated Hollywood action flicks, to quiet foreign-language dramas, to sharp-edged noirs, to silent films and everything in between. I suppose if I had to narrow it down to one type of cinema, it would most likely be “escapist.” Some of my favorite filmmakers include Stanley Kubrick, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Akira Kurosawa, Martin Scorsese, Charlie Chaplin, Francis Ford Coppola and Frederico Fellini. For the record, I consider German filmmaker Uwe Boll to be the worst director to have ever lived.
When not watching film, thinking about film, writing about film or thinking about writing about film, I also enjoy playing bass guitar, futzing around with graphic design, writing creatively, listening to classic rock, collecting toys and comics, playing tabletop games and engaging in other geeky pastimes.
A film buff in critic’s clothing–I simply love cinema of all kinds with every fiber of my being.
